The funding, which will support the selected projects over three years, represents one of the most significant climate research administration initiatives in Africa in recent years, sources indicate. The program specifically targets knowledge gaps identified through extensive consultations with the research community across the continent.
Addressing Critical Climate Vulnerabilities
The research initiative focuses on three primary thematic areas that analysts suggest are crucial for Africa’s climate resilience: the Water-Energy-Food-Health Nexus, Pollution, and Disaster Preparedness, Responsiveness, and Recovery. The green and blue economy was identified as a cross-cutting issue, with education and awareness encouraged as complementary activities.

Competitive Selection Process

The research teams comprise 126 members from 21 countries, creating a substantial international network of climate expertise. Team composition includes 87 Natural Scientists, 23 Social Scientists, and 16 societal partners, demonstrating the transdisciplinary approach championed by the Belmont Forum.
Continental representation shows 97 team members from 16 African countries: Botswana, Côte d’Ivoire, DRC, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. International partners include researchers from Turkey (Asia), France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland (Europe), the United States (North America), and Brazil (South America)., according to industry experts
Funding Structure and Institutional Support
The €4.29 million funding pool comes from 14 different funders, with the NRF contributing €1 million specifically to support participation of South African researchers. The Belmont Forum, described as a group of funding agencies from around the world, supports transdisciplinary, globally representative research groups using coproduction and participatory methods to address various global environmental change topics.
