The migration framework will be compatible with devices running iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 or later versions, sources indicate. Interestingly, Apple specifically notes that the framework is designed exclusively for data transfer between Apple and non-Apple platforms, primarily Android, rather than for migration between iOS or iPadOS devices. Analysts suggest this targeted approach indicates Apple’s recognition of the need for better cross-platform interoperability.

According to the documentation, the framework will not function in iOS apps running on visionOS or in macOS on Apple silicon. The report states that the framework “ignores calls from Mac apps built with Mac Catalyst,” clearly defining its scope to mobile device migrations.

How the Migration Process Will Work

Developers will be able to define whether their apps import data, export data, or support both directions by creating app extensions that conform to specific protocols. When users set up a new device, all apps implementing the framework will have their data included in the migration package. The API will integrate with the new “Transfer to Android” feature that was first reported in May.
