So where does this leave us? The authors rightly say ensuring this power is used responsibly is a “critical challenge.” But who’s responsible? The developers fine-tuning these models? The policymakers trying to regulate a technology that evolves weekly? Or us, the users, who need to develop a whole new kind of digital literacy? I think it’s all of the above. For developers, it means building in safeguards isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s essential to prevent these persuasion engines from going fully off the rails.
