According to EU-Startups, Reflex Aerospace just secured €50 million in Series A funding, making it the largest Series A in European New Space sector history. The German satellite platform manufacturer, founded in 2021, is developing payload-specific satellites for both commercial and defense applications. The round was led by Human Element alongside Alpine Space Ventures, Bayern Kapital, HTGF, and Renovatio Financial Investments. CEO Walter Ballheimer emphasized that “Europe cannot afford to remain reliant on external actors for space-based intelligence” and stated they’ll deploy capabilities in orbit by 2027. This comes as Germany plans to invest €35 billion in space-related defense projects through 2030, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius calling satellite networks an “Achilles heel of modern societies.”
Sovereignty drives investment
Here’s the thing – this isn’t just another tech funding round. We’re watching Europe scramble to build sovereign space capabilities after realizing how dependent they’ve become on external providers. The timing is everything. With Germany committing €35 billion to space defense and the EU planning its Space Shield Initiative for 2026, investors are betting big on companies that can deliver quickly. Reflex’s promise of “rapidly manufactured” satellites without “costly megafactories” hits exactly where European governments are feeling vulnerable.
The rush factor
But let’s talk about that 2027 deployment timeline. That’s incredibly aggressive for space hardware. We’re talking about developing, testing, and launching multiple satellite types – optical, SAR, SIGINT – in under three years. Space projects historically run behind schedule, and the complexity of building reliable satellites that can survive the radiation environment of space isn’t trivial. The pressure to deliver fast might lead to cutting corners, and in space, there are no quick fixes when something goes wrong 400 kilometers up.
Europe’s space race
What’s fascinating is how this fits into a broader European pattern. We’ve got Space Forge in the UK raising €26.8 million for in-space manufacturing, Astradyne in Italy working on solar panels, and now Reflex with this massive round. Europe seems to be building an entire space ecosystem almost overnight. The geopolitical context is impossible to ignore – this isn’t just about commercial opportunity anymore. It’s about ensuring Europe isn’t blind during the next crisis because someone else controls the satellites overhead.
The real test coming
So here’s my take: The money is impressive, but the real validation comes when these satellites actually reach orbit and work as advertised. Reflex got their first remote sensing satellite up in January 2025, which is promising, but scaling from one demonstration satellite to entire constellations is a massive leap. And let’s be honest – European space ventures have had their share of delays and cost overruns historically. The investors betting €50 million are gambling that modern manufacturing techniques and a sense of urgency can overcome that track record. We’ll know by 2027 if that bet paid off.
