According to GameSpot, PlayStation’s senior VP Eric Lempel revealed that the PS5’s best-selling game of all time hasn’t even been released yet, despite the console being five years into its lifecycle. The PS5 has sold 84.2 million units so far, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 currently leading US sales and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in second place. Sony CFO Lin Tao suggested the console may only be at its halfway point, while the company took a $204 million hit from Destiny 2’s underperformance. Ghost of Yotei managed 3.3 million copies since launch, but all eyes are on upcoming titles like Marvel’s Wolverine, Saros, and the delayed GTA 6 coming in November 2026.
The console’s awkward middle age
Here’s the thing about being five years into a console generation: it’s that weird middle ground where the initial excitement has faded but the true legacy-defining games are still brewing. Lempel saying they’re “just hitting our stride” feels both optimistic and telling. They’ve moved 84.2 million consoles—that’s massive—but they’re still waiting for that one game that defines the PS5 era the way Halo defined Xbox or Mario defined Nintendo systems.
The GTA 6 elephant in the room
Let’s be real—when a PlayStation exec says the biggest seller is “still to come” while GTA 6 is looming, it’s not exactly subtle.
