The roadmap reveals three distinct hardware tiers – AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium – positioning Google to compete across the entire price spectrum against machines like MacBook Air and Surface Laptop. Aluminium OS is being built with AI at its core, featuring deep integration with Google’s Gemini large language model and the company’s full AI stack. Google is currently hiring product managers to drive both ChromeOS and Aluminium simultaneously, indicating a planned transition period before eventually moving “from ChromeOS to Aluminium with business continuity.” The strategy represents Google’s most aggressive push yet into high-performance computing, moving beyond Chromebooks’ traditional budget positioning.

The Android Desktop Evolution

This isn’t exactly coming out of nowhere. We’ve seen hints of Android’s desktop ambitions for years, from Android’s desktop mode experiments to the gradual Chrome-Android convergence. But Aluminium OS represents Google‘s first serious attempt to build a unified platform specifically for desktop computing. Here’s the thing: ChromeOS has always felt like a compromise – a browser masquerading as an operating system. With Aluminium, Google finally gets to build something native from the ground up.

And that “AI at the core” positioning? It’s not just marketing speak.
